Papua New Guinea’s foreign affairs minister, Rimbink Pato say the PNG government is still hopeful that Fiji’s prime minister, Frank Bainimarama will attend this year’s Pacific Island Leaders Forum Summit.
Minister Pato says his government is committed to the continued membership of New Zealand and Australia in the region.
Meanwhile, Tongan prime minister, Akilisi Pohiva hopes that other island nations in the PIF can encourage Fiji to return the fold.
Pohiva says if small island nations stick together, they can eventually convince Fiji to stay, but he says New Zealand and Australia must remain members of the forum.
He added that any issues around membership should be discussed at the forum summit.
The leaders’ summit is scheduled for September this year, with PNG hosting.
